Whole gold and bronze linseed is an interesting and healthful food.

Whole linseeds are tough little capsules of strength, health and vitality; to release the maximum potential goodness the seeds should to be ground into a fine meal or cold-pressed into linseed oil. They are too tough to digest properly but once they’ve been ground or pressed all can benefit from their wonderful nutritional properties. It’s possible to grind them to a fine meal using a mortar and pestle (hard but rewarding work!) or an electric coffee grinder (just remember to clean the grinder thoroughly – the oil can get very sticky) to get all the benefits. The normal daily helping is 2-4 heaped tablespoons/25-50g/1-2 ounces.

Linseed as a traditional store-cupboard remedy for constipation.
Constipation can affect people of any age if they’re not eating properly, suddenly become inactive or have their digestive system disrupted by illness or medical treatment .  As a traditional treatment, either variety of whole Linseed is effectively gentle, bulk forming, and naturally lubricating. It is equally useful for young and old alike. Simply place two tablespoons of bronze or gold linseed in a glass of warm water, allow it to swell for a few minutes and then drink – do this once or twice a day. Alternatively add to food and drink an extra glass of water.  If the problem persists consult a doctor.

Cooking with whole Linseed.
Both types of seeds - whole bronze and gold - look tasty and add crunch and flavour when sprinkled onto salads, baking, yoghurt and breakfasts – and they’re even tastier if lightly dry-roasted first. Whole linseed is a traditional base for many drinks including Irish moss, and also linseed tea, which is both hydrating and refreshing.  Our linseeds are ideal for grinding at home.  See recipes pages for favorite ways to use whole and ground linseeds
