Welcome to our Flax Farm April update, where we share news and ideas for using flax to support your health.

Flaxseed oil can help sunshine work better

The weather is starting to brighten, but there’s still a chill in the air and fleeces are still very much part of the daily routine. The good news is that the omega-3 in flaxseed oil can help your body make better use of the small amounts of sunshine you are getting.

Omega-3 works together with the vitamin D produced by your body, supporting its anti-inflammatory effects and helping to improve your overall health.

  • Bone health
  • Cardiovascular wellness

Flaxseed oil works best when taken consistently over time, allowing beneficial omega-3 levels in the blood to build gradually. The benefits of flaxseed oil and omega-3 can extend throughout the body, supporting many aspects of health, something we’ll explore further in future newsletters.

Flax focus: fresh omega-3 protein diet breakfast or dessert

Back in the 1950s, Johanna Budwig recognised the growing health issues linked to increasing consumption of processed foods and created a diet to help address this. She based it on flax oil for omega-3 blended with quark (10% protein Greek strained yoghurt works just as well), together with nutrient-dense fresh fruits, vegetables, berries, and nuts.

Seventy-five years later, the benefits of these natural foods are probably even more relevant than ever, offering a powerful wholefood antidote to the ultra-processed foods (UPFs) common in modern diets.

If you don’t want to commit to the whole diet, just one meal a day can be supportive of overall health. Try swapping this recipe for your usual breakfast or enjoy it as a dessert.

Omega-3 protein recipe – breakfast or dessert

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp cold-pressed flaxseed oil for omega-3
  • 2 heaped tbsp (approx. 25g) ground flaxseed for fibre — for the digestion and to moderate sugars and carbs
  • 100g quark (strained Greek yoghurt or cottage cheese)
  • Whole, unprocessed fruits, berries and chopped nuts
  • 1 tsp raw honey

Method

Simply combine the flaxseed oil and quark very thoroughly. Place in a serving bowl, then add ground flaxseed, berries, fruit, honey and chopped nuts — and enjoy. Try this for at least one meal a day — you can have it for breakfast or as dessert after a light lunch — and see where you notice the differences after a month.

With Flax Farm cold-pressed flaxseed oil and ground flaxseed, it becomes a simple and enjoyable way to boost your nutrition.

Fun flax fact: more fibre helps you lose weight while you sleep

NutritionFacts reports on a study where scientists using a whole-body calorimeter found that people on a high-fibre diet lost extra calories overnight thanks to the gentle “workout” fibre gives your gut while you sleep. This could equate to 50 or more calories per day.

While that’s more of a fun bonus than a magical solution, adding ground flax is one of the best natural fibre sources and also contributes to weight and appetite control in many other effective ways. Try sprinkling a tbsp of ground flax into daily meals or swap your usual breakfast for a Flax Farm Flax Porridge or Muesli for a beneficial fibre boost – and next month we’ll tell you why the fibre in flax is so special.
