Flaxseed: Full of the Nutrients You Need in 2026

Adding flax to your food is one of the easiest ways to change your diet and feel healthier.

Flax is naturally rich in nutrients that modern diets often lack, including:
Omega-3 – helps control inflammation and supports the immune system
Fibre and soluble fibre – for gut health
Polyphenol antioxidants – which support hormone balance
A naturally low-GI effect that can help lower the glycaemic index of meals

That’s why adding flax to your diet can quickly make a noticeable difference — both to how you feel day to day and to your underlying health.

For me, flax was the starting point for eating more healthily over 20 years ago. It encouraged me to take more care with the rest of my diet too, with wide-ranging benefits — from building lean muscle more easily to better energy, easier weight control, naturally moisturised skin and an overall sense of wellbeing.

Focus on High Lignan Flaxseed Oil

Organic High Lignan Flaxseed Oil

Lignans are powerful natural antioxidants with mild, plant-based hormone-balancing properties. They occur in many unrefined plants and flaxseed is Nature’s richest source.

Flax Farm Organic High Lignan Flaxseed Oil is pressed in exactly the same way as our regular flaxseed oil, but it still contains lignan-rich particles from the seed. The bottles need shaking well to incorporate them and the oil is darker brown as a result.

Compared with ordinary flaxseed oil it is a bit like the difference between white bread and wholemeal.

Flax Recipes

Flax Farm recipes are about using flax for health with other delicious natural ingredients, no refined foods and no additives. This makes a way of eating that is easy to follow and feeds your body so it can work the way it is designed to.

Here are some new ideas for using flax.

Simple Seeded & Spiced Chickpea Flatbread

Simple Seeded and Spiced Chickpea Flatbread

This is one place where it has to be whole flaxseed rather than ground. It gives a lovely toasted flavour, a nice crunch and looks great whilst being a useful addition of fibre.

This is a quick and easy flatbread to make. It is high in plant protein, gluten-free and naturally low GI. Crisp outside, soft in the middle and ready in minutes. Lovely served warm with cheese, dips or soup. Leave out the spices and it also works well with marmalade or jam.

Spiced Green Coriander & Carrot Dip with Flaxseed Oil

Delicious homemade dip is tastier, cheaper and healthier than shop-bought. It is gluten-free and dairy-free. Flaxseed oil is a great way to get more omega-3 into your diet.

The dip is full of other good things too, green herbs for magnesium and other minerals, carrots for Vitamin A, nutritional yeast for B vitamins and heart-healthy beta-glucans, lemon juice for vitamin C, anti-inflammatory turmeric, and garlic for more health magic. It is so tasty I never need to put salt in it.

Quick Easy Ways to Use Flaxseed Oil

Some people follow diets that need to include flaxseed oil. Others, like me, simply find they feel better when they use it regularly. Here are a few easy ways to include our lovely flaxseed oil in your daily meals:

  • Drizzle over porridge. It makes porridge creamier, especially if using skimmed milk.
  • Stir into yoghurt. It makes fat-free yoghurt much more satisfying.
  • Spread on toast instead of butter.
  • Mash into a banana for breakfast or dessert.
  • Add to a smoothie.
  • Blend into frozen fruit or berries with banana for an instant ice-cream style dessert.

A Flax Fact: Why Flax and Linseed?

The plant Linum usitatissimum, which we know as flax or linseed, was domesticated about 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. The two names for the plant travelled from there across Europe and came into the English language by different routes.

Both names came from an ancient Proto-Indo-European language root. “Lin”, as in linseed and linen, described the plant and its use as both seed and fibre. This spread across Europe through Greek linon and Latin linum, bringing līn into early English.

“Flax”, referring to the fibre in the stems and fabric made from it, entered English via the Germanic-speaking peoples including the Angles, Saxons and Vikings.

Traditionally, linseed referred to the oilseed crop used for products such as oil paints and linoleum, while flax referred more specifically to the stems of the plant grown to make linen. More recently, the internet has brought American meanings to English. Linseed is now more often used for crops grown for industrial purposes or animal feed, and flax is used for human food, especially the oil and dietary fibre, as well as the fibre used for fabric.

Flax or linseed, it is the same amazing plant, giving us incredibly healthful foods and one of the world’s finest natural fabrics.
