This leaflet was published during World War 2 when growing linseed became important again as a food for cattle that were to produce the meat to feed the nation during wartime shortages.

Linseed has been grown all over the UK for more than two thousand years. The crop was grown to produce flax for ropes, nets and linen clothing. For centuries or many people flax was used to make linen which was the only alternative to wool for clothing. Linseeds, the seed of flax, was used for food, remedies, oil and cattle cake.

During the war there were projects for developing the growing of flax again for the fibre for parachute harnesses rope and fabric.
