🌞 Summer News from Flax Farm

Welcome to our latest Flax Farm update, where we share news and ideas for using flax to support your health.

We’ve had some lovely weather and even a near-drought. Can we hope for a summer of sunshine, with just enough rain for the gardens and crops (preferably only at night!)?

Focus on Low Glycaemic Index (Low GI) and how Flax Farm Foods Can Help

At Flax Farm, we’ve always valued the benefits of flax as a naturally Low GI wholefood. Low GI eating is about more than just cutting sugar it’s about how different foods interact, and how their physical form affects how quickly sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Whole grains digest more slowly than refined grains, and ground flaxseed is even better.

Why Ground Flaxseed is So Good for Blood Sugar Levels

Ground Flaxseed is naturally low GI and packed with a unique blend of soluble fibre. As Ground Flaxseed passes through the gut, it absorbs water and forms a thick gel that surrounds the food and slows down digestion. This helps sugars and starches enter the bloodstream more gradually, preventing glucose spikes and subsequent blood sugar crashes – giving you more constant energy between meals and reducing cravings. It makes it easier to say “no” to snacks.

Adding Flax Farm Ground Flaxseed to meals or choosing our Flax Porridge, Muesli, or Flaxjacks are simple, tasty ways to make your diet more Low GI. Even our Flaxseed Oil has a glycaemic index of zero! Are You Looking for Foods to Help Manage Your Blood-Glucose Levels?

Different Plants Called Flax

It’s summer and as our thoughts turn to gardening it’s time to answer some of the plant questions we get asked about Flax from flower colour to seed types and different species of Flax. Here are a few fun facts

  • In the UK, linseed was traditionally grown for oil. Taller varieties were known as flax and used for textiles – everything from fishing nets to fine bed linen and delicate lingerie (note “lin” in those names).

  • Did you know flaxseed plants can have white flowers as well as the more familiar blue ones?
  • When a completely unrelated plant was discovered in New Zealand, Phormium tenax, whose fibres were used by the Māori people for similar purposes it got called “New Zealand Flax.”

  • There’s even a plant called “Holy Flax,” which seems to have no obvious connection with our flax but is related to cotton lavender!

  • Our edible flax comes from the genus Linum, which includes nearly 200 species – ranging from tiny alpine plants to small woody shrubs, mostly with similar-shaped flowers in colours from red, yellow, and orange to blue and purple.
