Flaxjacks you can share with your dogs
For Human and Canine Athletes – and the not so Athletic
Recently, I had the good fortune to walk into the bakery just as the Malted Carob Flaxjacks were coming out of the oven. The aroma was glorious and so was the taste once they were cool enough to eat.
I originally created these Flaxjacks for Hebe, my old spaniel. Spaniels don’t have an off button, and they can be prone to suffering suddenly from low blood sugar. When Hebe was in his late teens, he was still very energetic and living up to his name (Hebe was the goddess of youth) but he sometimes overdid it and would become wobbly when his blood sugar dropped.
These malted Flaxjacks were the perfect answer. He only needed a little to keep his energy topped up and a yummy snack for me too. Now whenever I take the spaniels on very active outings I keep a pack in my pocket for all of us.
Why Malt: Twice As Much Energy As Sugar Or Honey
Malt extract contains maltose — a unique sugar made of two glucose molecules. When metabolised, maltose produces twice as much glucose as single sugars such as table sugar or honey.
This makes malt extract particularly effective for energising and restoring blood sugar levels quickly — ideal for both human and canine athletes.
Why malt with the carob? Doggy chocs have always been carob and when malt extract is added It really has a rich chocolatey taste, making healthy, safe alternative to chocolate.
Training Treats That Actually Work
Since I had Hebe I’ve had other spaniels to train. I don’t often train with treats but sometimes it’s what’s needed. The dogs haven’t been interested in the usual “training treats”, not even cheese or dried liver (yuk) but they LOVE Flaxjacks, which quickly get their attention. They’ve been a complete game-changer in training my young pocket-rockets.
Great Nutrition for Active Dogs (and People)
Flaxjacks are made with freshly milled flaxseed — nature’s richest source of omega-3.
Each Flaxjack contains approximately 3.5g of omega-3, helping to support:
The immune system
Joint comfort
Heart health
Skin health
A glossy coat
Omega-3 is essential for overall wellbeing in both people and dogs — particularly for active bodies.
Digestion Support for Modern Dogs (and Modern Humans)
Flax is also an excellent source of microbiome-supporting fibre.
Modern diets — for humans and dogs alike — often lack the diverse soluble fibre needed to nourish the gut biome. Ground flax helps fill that gap naturally.
Dogs’ ancestral diets included small amounts of vegetable matter such as berries, grasses, fruit — and yes, the gut contents of herbivore prey. Modern dogs rarely have access to this natural diversity of fibre.
The soluble fibre in flax gently supports restoration of the gut microbiome, which in turn produces essential short-chain fatty acids — crucial for digestion and overall health.
