Eating Flaxseed to Counteract Dryness Caused by the Weather

There’s nothing new about the beauty benefits of flaxseed (aka linseed)! In China they knew about the beauty benefits of flax as long ago as the Ming period (1368–1644)

When I first tried flax, I knew nothing about it. The results amazed me after having a teaspoon a day for three days I woke on the fourth to find my dry skin had become healthy and supple. Before long people were complimenting me on my complexion and soon after that, I noticed other unexpected benefits too, which is why this ancient Chinese image really resonated with me.

The picture shows a farmer holding a flax plant standing before a venerable Chinese gentleman with two attendants. The gentleman is expounding the health benefits of eating linseed in the autumn; evidently their skin suffered with the weather the same as ours does. According to traditional Chinese medicine, “eating the right amount of flaxseed helps restore moisture to the body and counteracts the harm caused by the weather.” Indeed, cold-pressed flaxseed oil and all ground flax products are especially rich in omega-3, which is how they provide natural moisturising from the inside. It can be more beneficial than applying moisturisers.

How to get Flax and Omega-3 in your diet for healthier skin

Getting enough Flaxseed to help your skin is as easy as adding any of these Flax Farm products to your diet daily. Every one of our products, even the Flaxjacks, give you a good daily helping of the flax omega-3 that ancient Chinese doctors recommended,

Flax Farm cold-pressed Flaxseed oil, an Easy Way to Use Flaxseed for Dry Skin

Flax Farm Cold-pressed Flaxseed Oil is a rich source of omega-3 (ALA) which is so useful for keeping the skin smooth and supple. It comes in convenient capsules and as oil for adding to porridge, smoothies, yoghurt and salads etc – see our recipes for ideas. Even a daily teaspoon of our flaxseed oil is a good start but you can use it freely in place of other fats and oils (salad dressings, butter, dips etc) that may contribute to inflammation and dryness.

Topical use of Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil can also be applied topically with good effect when skin is very dry. In the days when glaziers used linseed (flaxseed) putty to hold glass in windows they were renowned for having smooth hands.

Beauty from Within: the Science of Omega-3

Adding flaxseed to your food and finding it counteracts dryness might sound like magic but there’s real science behind it. Dry skin can be a sign of inflammation in the body. Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 (all our products contain some omega-3) a healthy anti-inflammatory fat, which helps your skin to moisturise itself from within.. See flaxseed for the skin.
