In Ancient Greece, Hippocrates, 460-370 BC, is now considered the father of modern medicine. He is famous for saying, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,” and the natural whole body approach to health that this reflects, was ahead of its time. Slowly, modern ideas are beginning to catch up with him. Flax was one of his favourite remedies, especially for the digestion, and it has even more relevance today.
When I first discovered flaxseed, it quickly taught me the meaning of “holistic” and how a food with so many nutritional benefits can work naturally with the body to improve health in many ways. At about the same time I realised wheat caused me many problems, I found having flaxseed as an ingredient in my fridge a great help on a gluten-free diet. You can make so many foods with it and I really noticed improvements in my health when I started to use it.
A daily helping of ground flaxseed and a little cold-pressed flaxseed oil became part of my routine. As well as providing the nutrients I was looking for, I noticed a number of positive changes in my overall well-being. One unexpected benefit for me was for the first time it became easier to manage my weight even with a bakery full of delicious Flaxjacks.

Flaxseed Oil 55% Omega-3: Important for the Whole Body and Mind
To quote the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health: “What makes omega-3 fats special?” They are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes. They provide the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation.”
Omega-3 is essential throughout the whole body for the whole family. The brain has a great demand for omega-3 as it develops in the womb and in the developing child. It plays an important role in the brain and throughout life, it is an essential nutrient for normal brain function. Other parts of the body where good omega-3 levels are essential for correct function are the retina (eye) and testes for making sperm cells.

Flaxseed Can Give You Good “Side Effects”
Merriam-Webster defines holistic as: “Relating to or concerned with complete systems rather than with individual parts.” The structures and stems of the body don’t work in isolation; holistic medicine helps the systems in the body support each other. Holistic medicine focuses on both the whole body and the mind. Put another way, instead of suppressing unwanted individual symptoms, holistic medicine works by getting the whole body to work better, enabling it to overcome problems. This means the “side effects” of holistic medicine is clearing up additional health issues as well as the original problem.
Mind and body are closely connected, so when improvements are felt in one area, they are often accompanied by positive changes in another. There is little point in trying to work out whether the brain influences the body or the other way round because they cycle a feedback between the two that is continuous. As long as you feel good and your blood test results show your body is working as it should, that’s all you need to know.
The first step in holistic medicine is to stop doing things to the body – and that includes eating foods that it can’t handle well – and ensuring it has all the essential nutrients it needs. Hippocrates prescribed flaxseed. The oil and ground flaxseed provide nutrients we need to consume more of, which is why they can work at so many levels throughout the body.
Skin, Joints, Digestion
Flaxseed is often “prescribed” by naturopaths and enlightened medical professionals. Unlike drugs, which often have side effects, most people find adding flaxseed to their diet positively beneficial.
For instance, you may have been recommended Flax Farm cold-pressed flaxseed oil for omega-3 by your optician or you may start using Flax Farm ground flaxseed because it fits well into a low-carb, low-sugar diet and find you enjoy improvements in your skin, complexion and digestion.
Flaxseed Adds Lots of Nutritional Benefits
Apart from omega-3 and fibre, flax provides a broad spectrum of types of fibre. Flaxseed fibre is the richest known dietary source of lignans, unique plant compounds with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The diet humans evolved with these nutrients, which is probably why people benefit from adding these nutrients back into the diet.
