Welcome to our Newsletter Autumn 2026

Evenings drawing in and the weather getting a bit chillier, so it’s time to think about looking after ourselves to feel fit to take on the winter. Fibre looks set to replace protein and become next years health trend – but we know from experience how much good fibre can do us. Flax fibre is uniquely kind to the body and effective – and some of the reason for that is its also high in omega-3 which helps a lot.

Focus on Fibre: What the new Fibre Buzzwords Mean for Gut Health and Flaxseed

Fibre has come a long way since we called it “roughage“. People thought of it as the rough, coarse, stringy and woody parts of plants that helped keep our bowels moving.  Soluble fibre has come to the fore in the last few years and now we’ve been hit with terms like viscous, fermentable, and gel-forming fibres – and more.

This new terminology doesn’t mean our food has changed, but it can give us important clues as to what foods to eat for our health.  In some ways it’s more simple than it sounds and the good news is, a helping of ground flaxseed addresses most of these new categories easily. Mukhwas flaxseed breath freshener and digestive seed mix on a spoon

Flax Fact: Flaxseed Finds Its Way into a Traditional Indian After-Dinner Nibble

Flaxseed has long had a place in traditional Indian medicine. More recently, flaxseed’s digestive properties have earned it a place in mukhwas, the traditional Gujarati after-dinner seed mixture. This blend of seeds and fragrant spices is eaten in small quantities after meals to freshen the breath, cleanse the palate and encourage comfortable digestion.

It can be a useful little nibble instead of chocolates or sweets to help quell the munchies and cravings. Sugary additions to mukhwas are popular in India, but I think we’re better off sticking just to the seeds!

Flax is a major ingredient in some modern mukhwas recipes, but you only eat a little at a time. For substantial digestive benefits, a couple of tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day will probably give you much more benefit. Nevertheless, mukhwas is a useful way to include a little extra flaxseed in your diet, especially if you don’t eat it every day.
